Project CB005.2.12. 012 “Joint initiatives to protect the European red forest ant from extinction” aims to determine the status of the European red wood ant in the cross-border area by identifying the nests and their distribution, to present an action plan with a conservation program, to increase the capacity and awareness of the responsible institutions and human resources on both sides of the border, to organize activities in the protected areas of both countries, which directly contributes to the conservation of European red wood ants and indirectly to the conservation of biodiversity in the cross-border area. Currently, the project is implementing a joint Bulgarian-Turkish study of the population of the European red wood ants with focus on Formica pratensis in the cross-border region of Strandzha mountain.
Given the essential role of Formica pratensis for the state of the ecosystem in Strandzha, the conservation of the species is crucial. Formica pratensis is the natural predator of Lymandria dispar caterpillars – the most destructive pest in the oak forests of Strandzha in the cross-border region and its preservation will significantly contribute to controlling the damage caused to the oak forests in Strandzha.
Within the project in the period 20.09.2020 – 22.09.2020 on the territory of the province of Kirklareli, Republic of Turkey and 25.09.2020 – 27.09.2020 on the territory of Burgas district, it is planned to be implemented two 3-days trainings – cross-border events, which will be attended by representatives of competent institutions and stakeholders on both sides of the border, as well as Bulgarian and Turkish teams, conducted a joint study. During the event the results of the study will be presented and discussed, there will be practical field visits, will be discussed the opportunities and threats in front of the European red wood ants in Strandzha region, common environmental problems and decisions in the cross-border Bulgarian-Turkish region, connected with biodiversity protection and conservation of common natural resources.
